The season of Lent is once again upon us. It’s the time of year when many people around the world give up something that they enjoy during the period between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday.
But I typically refer to this time of year as “Dessert Desert Season.”
That’s right. Every year I give up desserts for Lent. That means no cookies, cake, ice cream, or anything else that you might find on a restaurant dessert menu.
Some years I’ve made it all the way to the finish line, and other times, well…I haven’t. (It’s not my fault that Lent typically coincides with Girl Scout Cookie-selling season.)
I’ve been doing pretty well so far this year, but I must admit that with only a few weeks to go I’m beginning to crack. Walking past bakeries and cookie aisles in grocery stores has recently required mustering up extra doses of self-restraint.
I’ve even found myself day dreaming about what my first indulgence will be once Dessert Desert Season is over. Will it be a slice (or two) of Luscious Lemon Cake from Susie Cakes, one of the best bakeries in Los Angeles? Or maybe I’ll keep it closer to home and whip up Ina Garten’s Plain Pound Cake in my own kitchen.
Either way, the victory will be very, very sweet. 🙂
